Becoming a Begotten Son
The sons of Adam and the sons of Noah were not called “sons” merely because of biology, but because of what they proved by their faith. They became—or were begotten—sons born into God’s family for one reason: they listened to the voice of God and obeyed.
Eve said, “I have gotten a man from the Lord; wherefore he may not reject His words.” (Genesis 3:6)
Of Noah and his sons, it is written, “And Noah and his sons listened unto the Lord and gave heed, and they were called the sons of God.” (Genesis 5:5)
It's one of those absolute standards that you cannot become a son of God if you refuse to hearken to His voice.
Using Melchizedek as a clear example, here are the keys the scripture gives us:
"Now Melchizedek was a man of faith who wrought righteousness. And when a child, he feared God, and stopped the mouths of lions, and quenched the violence of fire. And thus, having been approved of God, he was ordained a high priest after the Order of the covenant which God made with Enoch, it being after the Order of the Son of God, which Order came not by man, nor the will of men, neither by father nor mother, neither by beginning of days nor end of years, but of God. And it was delivered unto men by the calling of his own voice, according to his own will, unto as many as believed on his name." (Gen 7:18)
Jesus, like the examples above, is a son of God because He listened to the voice of God. Except, He is the Only Begotten because He—and He alone—listened to the Father’s voice completely and perfectly. No one is like Him.
He declared of Himself:
“And behold, I am the light and the life of the world; and I have drunk out of that bitter cup which the Father hath given me, and have glorified the Father in taking upon me the sins of the world, in the which I have suffered the will of the Father in all things from the beginning.”
Though we may become sons and daughters of God, Christ remains the Father’s Only Begotten. None of us are His equal, because none of us have ever obeyed the Father with the perfect devotion shown by Him. Yet through Christ—the Only Begotten—we can become begotten sons and daughters ourselves.
“For as many as received Him, to them gave He power to become the sons of God—only to those who believe on His name.”
