Light's One Eternal Round
A brother and I intended to hike a few weeks ago to acknowledge the Spring Equinox, but life happened, so we missed the opportunity. The feeling of needing to still honor the day lingered, so we committed ourselves to going on a hike today instead, which happened to be the 190th anniversary of the church founded by Joseph Smith. I want to honor both moments in time by sharing an experience from a recent trip my family and I took to St. George.
While in St. George, we went to Snow Canyon State Park and explored the park's lava tubes. The lava tubes were created as lava from an ancient volcano flowed through the area, leaving behind hollowed-out passageways underground. They are esstentially caves now.
As you look down into the cave, you can somewhat see how far the light from the surface exposes the inside of the cave.
As my oldest son and I descended into the cave we quickly realized the light from above did not reach much further than what we saw from our initial view looking down. For the rest of the way down into the cave, I was forced to use the lesser artifical light from my cell phone.
What's interesting, though, is when we reached the furthest part of the cave, we turned around, looked up, and could see everything leading back to the entrance of the cave from the light coming down. We no longer needed the light from my phone as we traveled the whole way back.
It was quite the paradox to quickly lose light and ultimately see nothing as we walked further into the darkness, but the moment we decided to turn around after reaching the bottom, we could see everything again.
Back to the hike today with my brother.
Although we missed the initial opportunity to connect on the Spring Equinox, I'm glad we went today. It showed me, among many other things, that it's never too late to make time for the important relationships in our lives.
