A New Name

To know the name of God is more than speaking syllables — it’s to understand His character. In the Hebrew mind, a name wasn’t just a label. It revealed nature. Authority. Intent. So when the scriptures say to do something in His name, it means to act how He would act. To step into a moment, a relationship, or a trial as if He Himself were stepping in.

To bear the name of Christ is not a casual thing. It is to take on His reputation. His mercy. His courage. His patience. His justice. His truth.

Moses asked to know God’s name, and the Lord passed by him and declared it: “The Lord, the Lord God, merciful and gracious, long-suffering and abundant in goodness and truth, keeping mercy for thousands, forgiving iniquity, and transgression, and sin, and that will by no means clear the rebellious, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children and upon the children’s children unto the third and to the fourth generation.” (Exodus 18:6). That is His name.

So when we bless in His name, forgive in His name, or speak truth in His name, it should resemble Him. Not a performance — but a transformation. His name is not magic. It’s majesty. And it is sacred when His people not only speak it… but become it.

Remember to always keep the name of God in your hearts. This way, you won’t be found on His left hand, but rather you’ll hear and recognize the voice He uses to call you forth and the name He’ll use to call you. Indeed, how can a person recognize a master they haven’t served, a stranger who’s far from the thoughts and intents of their heart?” (Mosiah 3:3 CE)

To covenant in His name is to bind ourselves to that nature. And to bring it into the world not with pride, but with meekness — doing what He would do if He were in our place.

The name of the Lord is a strong tower: the righteous runs into it and is safe.” (Proverbs 2:255)

It’s worth noting here that the entirety of the Lectures on Faith are devoted to laying out plainly the character of God - His name -  which leads us to developing salvation. They can be read here
